making More iron on patches! I mean I’m still in the rough sketch stage and I can’t really afford to get any new ones made rn but I have SO MANY IDEAS, and I really love how my first one turned out.

reading Last time I made a post like this I was reading the first book in a looooooong four-book series, Otherland by Tad Williams. I thought it was gonna take me months to finish the whole series but here we are a month later and I am already well into book four. OOPSSSSSS. After that post I burned through book one (City of Golden Shadow) and book two (River of Blue Fire) super fast. Book three (Mountain of Black Glass) dragged a bit but it’s starting to pick up again in book four (Sea of Silver Light). I’m prob gonna finish the whole thing before December and I’ll need some new books to read after this so any recs would be appreciated!

watching Watching reality tv while u work is a given for us Real Housewives of Etsy. I hadn’t been Keeping Up with the Kardashians lately but there are two seasons I hadn’t watched yet on Hulu so I’m kommitted to getting kaught up. Also watched & enjoyed recently: Master of None in a weekend (loved it), Inside Out last Saturday (I cried before the opening credits so you can imagine how that went), and the best show on tv rn and if you aren’t watching it you are not living your best tv life, You’re the Worst. Seriously, watch it.

loving Cozy everything; thermal leggings, woolly socks, my husband’s sweaters. Snuggling on the couch in a heap of blankets with a hot drink (whiskey optional) and a fluffy dog. Even my cat is getting into it and will snuggle with me on the bed, purring and being super-heated (what is a cat’s average body temperature? I feel like it is higher than a regular humans).

planning TRYING to come up with a more efficient shoe storage system for the foyer, right now all of my, Taylor and Sym’s shoes are on a rickety rack and every time someone bumps against it they come pouring down in a shoenami. I’m looking at getting a pair of these cube cubbies.

wishing I had more hours in the day to get everything done without giving up my precious internet time wasting ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

lord kichoumort

So I mentioned I made a list of projects I need to finish around the house before I can put up any(more) Christmas decorations. This is the list:

• put up bedside lights in bedroom

• make pee pad pan for front bathroom

• sand & paint baseboard in front bathroom

• take all Halloween decorations to storage

• put insulating plastic on at least 6 windows

• install whale bath toy scoop

I feel like some of these need explaining: The pee pad pan & painting the baseboard are part of the same thing: back when Taylor was a single dog parent to Kichou, he worked long hours and Kichou would be at home alone so he learned to do his dog business on papers in the bathroom, a practice that continued when they moved in with me. Now he’s old and incapable of learning new tricks so he’ll still peeing on papers (or rather, pee pads) in the night. We actually got reusable, washable fabric pee pads for him to save money (and the environment) but the problem is he is a boy dog and he lifts his leg to pee every. time. So he was peeing on the baseboard and even if we sort of propped the pee pad against it, it would often fall over or slide down and as a result, the baseboard in that part of the front bathroom is STRAIGHT UP NASTY. We’ve tried cleaning it with vinegar and with bleach and it’s just beyond cleaning and as a result the room smells not great. We got some Kilz stain/odour sealing primer to use when we repaint it, but I was like “what is the point of repainting this when it’s just gonna get peed on again?” We needed some kinda litter tray to put the pee pad in to keep the pee area away from the baseboard but like… that is not a thing that is available commercially. Kichou won’t go in something that he has to jump into, so a regular, cat-style litterbox is out of the question, and while they do make 2-sided triangular corner litter trays for bunnies and ferrets, they aren’t big enough for a dog. SO HERE’S WHAT I DID: I bought a medium large Sterilite storage bin and I hacked it up with a saw. Those things are a lot harder to cut that you think they’ll be, but I had this little handsaw that did a pretty decent job. I cut off two sides so it’s still rectangular, and the sides are higher than the baseboard and higher than such a little dog can pee. It needs a little work still, I want to cut off the wide top edge so I can clip the pee pad in place, but so far it seems like it’s working and we can go ahead and sand/repaint now.

Wow, that was a lot of dog pee talk, and I apologize. That isn’t even the point of this post! The main story is the GODDAMN WHALE BATH TOY SCOOP. Gwen is a small child and has bath toys, and ever since she was little we’ve used one of those suction cup net bags to store them. The suction cups are pretty fried tho, and no longer stick to the tile. It’s also annoying fishing all her billions of toys out of the tub. I suggested to Taylor we get a scoop-style one, and a few weeks ago he ordered this Boon Whale Scoop. It’s a three-piece item: the scoop, a shelf the scoop hooks on to, and a bracket to hang the shelf on. There are two options for installing the bracket: you can either screw it into the tile OR it has adhesive tabs on the back to just stick it up. I’m not about to start drilling holes in tile so I decided to go the adhesive tab route, but I’d read some reviews that said the adhesive wasn’t great and people’s whales had noisily fallen down in the middle of the night and broken. To help it stay in place I decided to reinforce the adhesive tabs with some Sugru (an amazing product which I love); I had one pack of it left over from a different project.

It wasn’t just as simple as sticking the whale on the wall though; I had to clean the tiles thoroughly, then clean them again with rubbing alcohol, and after sticking the bracket up I wasn’t supposed to let it get wet for 24 hours so the adhesive could cure. Not so easy in a house full of people having showers all the time, but on Monday evening I was finally able to berate Symphony and Taylor to both have their showers early so I could get it done. So I was all ready to clean the wall when I realized… I’d put the box with the whale scoop in Gwen’s bedroom closet, and she was already asleep. There was no way I was going to risk waking her up so I resigned myself to having to wait another day when Mark Fluffalo, doing his Scary Cat Abandoned Psychiatric Hospital routine, jumped out and scared Sym in the hallway. She screamed right outside Gwen’s door, waking her up. I was able to soothe her back to sleep fairly quickly, and also get the whale out of the closet! I went ahead and cleaned the tile, applied all the extra adhesive, and stuck the bracket to the wall.

24 hours later the adhesive was finally cured and I went to hang the shelf on the bracket, but I couldn’t get it to fit. I was trying so hard to jam the dang thing over the bracket and suddenly I was like… wait a minute, and tried putting the shelf on the bottom of the bracket, where it fit perfectly, because I’d stuck the bracket to the wall upside down. ALL THAT FRICKIN HASSLE AND I PUT IT THE WRONG WAY UP LIKE R U KIDDING ME??? I had to pry it off the wall with a butter knife which took FOREVER because of all the extra adhesive, and now guess what? I don’t have anymore adhesive to put it back up with! I had to order more and now I’m waiting for it to arrive so I can try again, and in the meantime I still have to clean all the old adhesive bits off the tile. RIDICULOUS and FRUSTRATING as I’d crossed this item off my list and I had to UNcross it.

I do have one super success story though: yesterday I put that not-at-all-tacky shrink-fit insulating plastic on more than six windows. I actually had this up before but the property manager made me take it down because he said it could “damage the paint” on the window frames. In my opinion it’s a lot more damaging to have the painted window frames constantly wet from condensation and growing a gross biofilm all over them, and if they didn’t want the frames damaged MAYBE they should have sprung for double-paned windows instead of these cheap single panes BUT WHAT DO I KNOW. He actually sent me a registered letter with a list of suggestions on how to avoid window condensation (which he came in person to tell me he’d sent because the property management office is like 50 feet from my door?) and they were all total nonsense, like “turn on the heat lamp in your bathroom” when I don’t have a heat lamp in my bathroom, “open the window in your bathroom” when I don’t have a window in my bathroom, and “leave a window open in every room all the time day and night all winter long” when I’m not looking to freeze and also I live in a basement apartment and I’m not looking to get home invaded, raped and murdered either. Weird how a guy who lives in a big house in the suburbs and drives a Mercedes has NO IDEA what it’s like living in my rickety basement apartment, but ANYWAY, I had to take all the plastic down. So annoying and I had to spend a significant portion of last winter drying off all my windows multiple times a day. HOWEVER I recently learned that he quit or got fired or idek, but who cares HE’S GONE and I’ve insulated (most of) my windows again.

It is well and truly fall now. We got up on November 1st and it was suddenly freezing out. My friend Mark made a joke on facebook this morning about all the people wearing scarves and North faces already but you know what? IT’S FRICKIN COLD. I almost got my own North Face out of storage last week and I think the only reason I didn’t have more to do with how much time I spent NOT going outside than any sort of “oh it’s not THAT cold” thoughts. I mean… your body becomes acclimatized to the weather/temperature of whatever place you live and when you live here, anything under 10°C is FRICKIN COLD, and really, why would you want to live somewhere where it regularly dips way below freezing. NO THANKS.

On Saturday we had a small family gathering to celebrate Symphony and Gwen’s birthdays. It was pretty low-key and OF COURSE I didn’t get pictures. I remember thinking to myself that morning “I have to remember to get pictures this year!” and I then I didn’t even take out my camera. I did instagram a pic of the cake, wowe these precious memories. Actually I was pretty happy with how it turned out; I made a tired chocolate layer cake with green icing and decorated it with green sprinkles, rosemary sprig “trees,” and little plastic deers, birds and mushrooms. I also managed to fit 17 candles (14 for Sym, 3 for Gwen) onto the tiny top tier which I thought was very impressive.

Now that Halloween and the girls’ birthdays are over I can dive right in to Christmas… except I have a bunch of stuff I NEED to do around the house and I made a deal with myself I wouldn’t put up any Christmas decorations until I finish them all. Although… I didn’t say I couldn’t BUY new Christmas decorations. Look, that little tree was EIGHTY percent off! And I don’t usually go to the store where I got the two baubles so it’s not like I can buy them later. And it wouldn’t really make sense to buy new things and put them in storage for like two weeks so I might as well just keep them in the house and so I haven’t REALLY put up any decorations… Nice loophole, huh?

SPEAKING OF THE HOLIDAYS if you want to get any banners or whatnot from the shop, today (November 9th) is the last day to place orders for Hanukkah decor/gifts and November 23rd (rapidly approaching) is the last day to place orders for Christmas decor/gifts. One thing that I think would make a great gift would be one of my “Red Lipstick is Black Magic” iron on patches! They are available for pre-order now and will be shipping as soon as they reach me, which will be soon as the manufacturer shipped them yesterday.

I think once Gwen turns three (in just a couple of weeks!) I’m not allowed to call her a toddler anymore, she will be a preschooler. Of course I still call her a baby sometimes but like… she is my babyyyyyyyy. In some ways she still seems so young (I’ve talked abt this before; her delayed speech is the cause) but she is growing up way too fast and she is into everything, all the time.

Yesterday in particular she was in rare form, like if I took my eyes off her for one second she was off making mischief. She took of all her clothes, climbed up on top of her dresser and then peed all over it. She got into the bathroom and gave herself a neon manicure. She climbed up on the kitchen counter, found a box of smarties in a cabinet I forgot to lock and gorged on chocolate. She got into the bathroom AGAIN and found the bottle of nail polish remover I forgot to put away after cleaning up her manicure, managed to open it and I just barely caught her before she started pouring it out.

Aside from all her sneaky shenanigans, she really is the sweetest, most affectionate little girl. “More hug, more kiss, more pat,” is what I hear from her all day everyday. Mostly “more pat more cat” (the girl loves cats!) but sometimes “more hug ma” (the girl loves calling me “ma”). When it’s hug time she wraps her little but freakishly strong arms around you tight and won’t let go, mashing her whole face and body into you, squeezing hard as if to express her affection through sheer force. Of course, all of this only applies to the very few people she likes; everyone else gets the brush off.

sleepy time

Literally yesterday I was lamenting to Taylor that there are all these cute fall kid’s pajamas rn but since Gwen TECHNICALLY hasn’t grown out of all her current pajamas I can’t justify buying any. Then after her nap this afternoon she snuck into the bathroom (someone- NOT ME -left the door open) and decided to update her manicure, her pajamas and indeed her entire body and the toilet seat lid with half a bottle of American Apparel Neon Purple nail polish. I was able to clean up the kid and the room but the pajamas were a wash in that they could not be washed so OBVIOUSLY she needs some new ones now, right? Right.

The other day I posted a picture I took of a skyscraper- blue glass against a blue sky- in a blog post and I joked (“joked”) to Taylor how off-brand it was for me. Since then I’ve been thinking a lot about the image I present here on this blog, and on instagram. I definitely carefully frame and compose all my pics to avoid including a lot of tall buildings, cars, and other urban things. Most of my pictures come from the park, the beach or the Seawall. Pictures of trees and moss and the ocean and sky. Usually I’ll only include pictures of the city from afar, like I don’t live in it, but really my house is right in the middle of downtown.

I love Vancouver and I think it’s beautiful, but I love nature more. I think trees are just about my favourite thing to look at. I don’t think I could to give up the convenience of living in the city, but sometimes I just like REALLY want to get away and go live in a cabin in the wilderness, in the forest, on the side of a mountain. Probably because I don’t want to deal with all my problems, haha. I’m feeling pretty sad this week, about a lot of things but also about nothing. I think I get sad every October. I start working (part time) next week and this morning when I was out with Gwen I was thinking about how much I DON’T ever want my life to be about work again (not that it ever really was, except for those 6 months in 2010 when I was at max capacity for daycare kids and hated my life and cried every day). I just want to create things and have that be enough.

making I have been making a lot of stuff lately, and have plans to make so much more. I want to make a lot of gifts for the holidays this year (bc I am broke) and I just have so many IDEAS. This week I’m working on customizing the shoes for Gwen’s Halloween costume, as well as finishing up a new pair of boots for her. She actually just grew out of her entire collection of handmade boots, and she’s getting a little big for just suede-soled footwear so I tried something new and put a rubber sole on this pair. It didn’t turn out perfectly, and there are a couple of spots around the edges that could use a little more glue BUT I think they are alright. Some other things I want to make include more suede/leather patches, a painted leaf-patterned paperweight for my desk, and a felt woodland garland for Gwen’s bedroom.

reading After recently finishing the umpteenth re-read of my fave fantasy series of all time Memory, Sorrow and Thorn, I decided it was time for a reread of another series by the same author: Otherland. I originally read this series when it was first published (between 1996 and 2001) and own all the books in hardcover. UNFORTUNATELY we are between bookcases and all our ~physical media~ books are in boxes in the back of Gwen’s bedroom closet. I was thinking of digging them all out but ughhhhhhh there are literally a dozen boxes to search through. In the end I bought the first book for my kindle and like… it was $9 and it’s taking me FOR.EV.ER. to read it. So either I will have the time to find the motivation to get out the actually books for the rest of the series, or I will be spending $9 a month for the next few months on the other three books.

watching Almost all of my tv shows are back! In fact I think we are watching TOO MANY shows and I might need to quit some that I feel are not a worthwhile anymore cough*Supernatural*cough. It’s just so bleak; it’s fallen into the speculative fiction tv series trap where each season needs to outdo the last in terms of how terrible the struggles faced by the protagonists are. Every season and they face stronger and stronger foes and have more awful turmoil and everyone’s miserable and it just gets bleaker and bleaker until it’s JUST FUCKING DEPRESSING. Honestly when Taylor told me it was back on last week my reaction was “ughhhhhhhhhhhhh.”

loving This autumn weather. There have been a few rainy days but there have also been so many beautiful sunny, crisp, wonderful ones. It’s been hard to get much done around the house because all I wanna do is take Gwen out on adventures. Even the rainy days have been alright, Gwen has her Newt Suit from MEC (I cannot recommend this suit enough, it is so much better than any other kid’s rainsuit I’ve had experience with) and I just got a new raincoat myself. My old raincoat was still in perfect shape, but I loaned it to Sym. She is SO PICKY about coats and she liked mine so it was just easier to let her keep it and get myself a new one. I’d been borrowing Taylor’s Trail Model raincoat from LL Bean and I liked it so much I decided to get myself the same one. There is a women’s version but I got the men’s because a) I wanted a green coat, and b) I think the men’s is longer. Taylor’s is in the “tall” style and I would have liked to have gotten that length for myself but they don’t make a medium in tall.

planning So much holiday/birthday stuff! idk why I thought it was a good idea to have two kids 11 years and three days apart right after Halloween, but I did and now I have to plan their birthday party while simultaneously planning Halloween, and also for good measure why not plan some Christmas stuff too? I have this little house-shaped wooden shelf that I’m thinking of using for an advent calendar, and I finally bit the bullet and ordered a rug to paint for the play mat I’m making Gwen for Christmas. Actually, I ordered one rug and then cancelled the order because literally the next day one of the other rugs went on sale 40% off! The rug I ended up getting will be more work to customize but I think it will turn out really cool.

wishing I had money to spend on furniture. I really want to get a bench for the foot of my & Taylor’s bed, to use as storage for linens and also to replace the dog stairs. I also want to get this sideboard for the dining room and I absolutely need to figure out some sort of storage situation for the hallway, something with cupboards below to keep craft supplies and extra shoes and stuff in, and bookcases up top so I can finally unpack all the aforementioned boxes of books.

I think one of my favourite things about not working are the quiet, lazy mornings I get to spend with just Gwen, when Taylor is at work and Sym has already left for school. Of course, she is two-almost-three years old so they aren’t literally quiet; most days she wakes me up by yelling “ma. MA. MAAAAAA!” from her room, and I when I get up I usually find she’s pulled all the linens off her bed, or thrown all her books off the shelf, or emptied the contents of her pajama/sock/underwear* drawer all over the floor. She’s usually naked; I usually have to play a game of find-the-soggy-diaper.

Once I have her up our morning ritual is she gets to watch a VERY SMALL amount of one of her shows (Yo Gabba Gabba, Pee-wee’s Playhouse or her new fave, Steven Universe) and have a granola bar while I drink my coffee and go through all the notifications & emails I got overnight. Next we get dressed and take Georgie for her walk, and when we get back from the park we have breakfast. Often by this time it’s close to ten and breakfast is more like brunch, and today Gwen, who is in a non-eating phase, refused to have anything. So I had pie for brunch. It’s fine, I’m an adult.

I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned it but I’ve booked a new daycare client to start at the end of this month, but just two days a week so I will still have some quiet mornings with Gwen.

*Gwen is still in diapers but I bought a bunch of cute lil underpants in anticipation of potty training. I’m actually attempting it this week by going cold turkey off diapers when we’re at home/awake, and bribing her with mini eggs. Gwen knows when she has to pee and will sit on the potty, but she won’t actually use it. Instead she holds her pee and tells me she wants a diaper, and then tries to negotiate with me for a “choc.”

On Monday I took Gwen up to Capilano Suspension Bridge Park in North Vancouver. I was a little daunted by the cost; adult admission to the park is almost $40 with tax, but as a BC resident I was able to get an annual membership at no additional cost so I figured it would be worth it. I’d never actually been up there before but there is a free shuttle bus that stops a block and a half from our house so I was like WHAT THE HECK. I had originally wanted Taylor to come with us as well but he’s back to working nights, and plus he is PETRIFIED of heights so I’m guessing that a freaky-ass wobbly bridge stretching over a canyon isn’t high on his must-do activities list.

Since we went on a weekday morning I was hoping that it wouldn’t be too busy but the nice weather meant it was pretty packed. The shuttle bus was full before the last stop on the way there and there were tons of people on the bridge. It was pretty wobbly; I’m not sure if more people make it more wobbly but that thing felt like Galloping Gertie! I was a little worried Gwen would be flipped out but she wasn’t afraid at all, and happily tromped across bridge with no hesitation. She was actually more scared of the totem poles in the park and wouldn’t go anywhere near them.

After crossing the canyon we walked through the Treetop Adventure, past the trout ponds and along the boardwalk through the forest. Gwen went up and down tons of stairs and over all the little bridges on her own, but after a couple of hours of walking she was getting pretty tired and grumpy. I knew she was in no mood to check out the Cliffwalk, but she also refused to go in the gift shop and was chanting “home. home. home.” That was a pretty clear indicator that she was 100% done by that point so we just hopped back on the shuttle bus and headed back downtown.

Overall I really liked the park; there was a lot to see and do- we were there for hours and still didn’t do everything, and for locals who can get the annual pass it’s actually pretty reasonably priced. If I go once a month for the next year that’s only $3.33 a visit! I plan on going a lot (maybe next time on a day with less flawless weather when it’s not as busy) and hope to find a way to convince Taylor and Sym to come too, possibly for the Canyon Lights at Christmastime.
